PayrollOrg offers two types of certifications. Each exam has specific requirements and skill levels. Below are the different exam types as well as links to the PAYO site for more information.
If interested in taking an exam, check out the NWPC study groups. Study groups are offered twice per year in preparation for the spring and fall testing windows.
Functional Payroll Certification (FPC)
Payroll certification opens many doors for payroll professionals. The wealth of knowledge covered on the Fundamental Payroll Certification exam, even if it doesn’t fit what you are doing today, is immeasurable for your future. Not only does this designation help secure promotions and demonstrate your value to your organization – it enhances your standing within the entire payroll profession.
The Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) is open to all those who wish to demonstrate a baseline of payroll competency. The exam consists of 150 questions, and candidates have 3 hours to complete it. The FPC is designed for:
- Entry-level payroll professionals
- Sales professionals/consultants serving the payroll industry
- Systems analysts/engineers supporting payroll systems
- Payroll service provider client representatives

Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)

The Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is a certification credential for those with extensive payroll knowledge and experience. The exam consists of 190 questions, and candidates have 4 hours to complete it. The Certification Board requires that payroll professionals fulfill ONE of the following criteria before they are eligible to take the CPP examination.
CRITERIA 1:
The payroll professional has been practicing for at least a total of three (3) years out of the five (5) years preceding the date of the examination application. The practice of payroll is defined as direct or related involvement in at least one of the following:
- Payroll Production, Payroll Reporting, Payroll Accounting, Payroll Systems, and Payroll Taxation
- Payroll Administration
- Payroll Education/Consulting
CRITERIA 2:
Before a candidate takes the CPP examination, the payroll professional has been employed in the practice of payroll as defined in Criteria 1 for at least the last 24 months, and has completed within the last 24 months, ALL of the courses within ONE of the following three options offered by PayrollOrg:

- Payroll Practice Essentials and
- Intermediate Payroll Concepts and
- Advanced Payroll Concepts and
- Strategic Payroll Practices
Option 2
Option 3

CRITERIA 3:
Before a candidate takes the CPP examination, the payroll professional has been employed in the practice of payroll as defined in Criteria 1, for at least the last 18 months, has obtained the FPC designation, and has completed within the last 18 months, ALL of the courses within AT LEAST ONE of the following three options offered by PayrollOrg:
